When in Singapore: A No-Nonsense Guide for First-Timers

Singapore citySingapore is a beautiful city. Despite its small size, it’s worthy of exploration and adventure. It can get overwhelming too especially if it’s your first time visiting the country. But you don’t need to fret; here is a rundown of all things you need to do and see when in Singapore.

1. Visit the hawker centres

Fancy restaurants abound in Singapore, but the best places to go are not limited to these places. There are other places that offer great food for tourists, and the best place for an affordable and unforgettable dining experience is the hawker centres that are found everywhere in the City-state. They offer Chinese, Malay, and Indian cuisine, and some of them even have a Michelin-rating! It’s the same place where you’ll find the locals having breakfast or high tea. You should also note that alcohol is heavily taxed in the country.

2. Understand some Singlish

Singlish, the language of the locals, is a combination of Chinese, Malay and English. ‘Lah’ is one word you’ll often hear, and the words ‘yes’ and ‘no’ are replaced by ‘can’ and ‘cannot’.

3. Know and follow the laws

Singapore is clean and safe thanks to its strict laws and the disciplined locals. Do the same. Know the laws. You won’t get arrested for accidentally dropping a wrapper. However, an arrest is highly possible when you chew gum and spit it out on the street corner or side walk. Spitting, jaywalking, and littering in public are all punishable offences.

4. Hit the rooftops

Many establishments have a roof deck. It’s one way to see Singapore in a different angle, so don’t forget to go there and bask in the amazing view particularly near the marina. If possible, go there at night so you can see the nightly laser show.

Singapore is such a nice place to visit. However, do what every prudent traveller must do: read up on the place beforehand so you would know what to do to fit in with the locals once you get there.
